Kitchen Essentials: Cast Irons

Embarking on the culinary journey can be a bit overwhelming, especially when your kitchen isn’t armed with the right tools. I’ve shared various insights on stocking your pantry with essential ingredients, but let’s face it, even with a pantry full of goodies, the absence of proper kitchen equipment can still leave you scratching your head when it comes to whipping up a meal, no matter how simple.

Now, I won’t delve into specific brands—tastes vary widely, and personally, most of my kitchen essentials either came to me through inheritance or as wedding gifts. Instead, let’s focus on the indispensable basics every home chef should possess, exploring their multifaceted uses. In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be breaking down each crucial piece of kitchen equipment or gadget, starting today with what I consider the holy grail of versatility: the cast iron.

In my kitchen, no pan sees more action than my trusty cast iron skillets. Inheriting two deep and high-quality cast iron skillets was a stroke of luck. These sturdy kitchen workhorses excel at retaining and evenly distributing heat, seamlessly transitioning from stovetop to oven or grill. An added bonus? Regular use of cast iron cookware introduces essential iron into your diet. From eggs and meats to vegetables and sauces, cast irons are your culinary Swiss Army knife.

However, a word of caution—metal utensils are a big no-no when it comes to cast iron cookware. Stick to the safer side with wooden or plastic utensils to avoid damaging the enamel. Personally, I’m all about wooden utensils for nearly every culinary endeavor. Scratching off the enamel is a cardinal sin that could compromise your cherished pans.

Maintaining your cast iron’s pristine condition requires some special care. Forget about soap and dishwashers; instead, use a dedicated dish brush to scrape off any lingering bits of food. For more stubborn residues, create a mixture of olive oil and table salt, rubbing it into the pan with a paper towel until everything comes off. Rinse away any remaining salt and ensure your cast iron is thoroughly dry.

Every now and then, about once or twice a year, your cast iron will deserve a little extra TLC in the form of seasoning. Rub oil on both sides of the pan and place it upside down in a preheated 450-degree oven for an hour. This magical process transforms your cast iron into a nearly nonstick wonder, reviving even those neglected pans at the back of your cabinet. Trust me; the difference in your cooking will be nothing short of amazing. So, dust off those old cast irons, give them the love they deserve, and watch as they become indispensable allies in your culinary exploits. Stay tuned for more kitchen essentials in the coming weeks!
